CHAPTER THIRTEEN

My mother finished her drink and sighed. "I feel so much better now. Thanks, girls. Sometimes I just need a little break from Daddy."

"Seriously, Mom, I don't know how you do it." Gianna stared at her in wonder. "I love Dad, but thirty-five years with him? You deserve some kind of medal."

"What is this?" A familiar voice spoke from behind me. Grandma Rosa was standing there in a dark blue cardigan sweater and black slacks with sensible flats. She shook her head at us in dismay. "My entire family is floozing it up at a bar?"

Jeez Louise. "Grandma, I think you mean boozing."

She shrugged. "Whatever."

"Ma, what are you doing here?" Mom wanted to know. "Where's Domenic?"

Grandma Rosa sat down in Rick's deserted chair and placed her purse on her lap. "That husband of yours is too much. He wanted to know when I was going to make dinner." She gave an indignant snicker. "I told the pazza to send out for pizza."

Mom gasped while Gianna and I looked at each other in amazement. My grandmother didn't do takeout. Why buy pizza when she could whip up a homemade one that tasted so much better?

"Are you feeling okay, Grandma?" Gianna asked worriedly.

Grandma Rosa waved a hand in the air. "Yes, but I have had enough of everyone demanding dinner whenever they feel like it." She shook her finger at my mother. "Since none of you bothered to share your plans with me about getting drunk, I decided that I was taking the evening off too."

Mom raised an eyebrow. "I don't believe it."

Grandma Rosa nodded. "We all have our limits." She patted Gianna's hand. "My dearest girl, you need to make up with your husband. He is missing you and Alex terribly."

"Where is Alex?" Gianna's eyes widened.

"Not to worry," Grandma Rosa assured her. "He went to sleep before I left. Even your father should be able to handle a sleeping baby."

Gianna slumped in her chair. "Grandma, I know that you're right about most things, but this is different. I'm dealing with a lack of trust here. I have no secrets from Johnny and expected the same in return. What if he's hiding something else?"

Grandma Rosa muttered something in Italian. "You are a stubborn one, just like your sister." She cocked an eyebrow at me. "And you have been fighting with Mike, cara mia. It is not good."

Holy cow. I'd always suspected my grandmother was psychic, and now I was convinced. "How do you always know these things?" I asked in amazement.

"Telephones," Grandma Rosa said simply.

"You mean telepathic," I corrected her.

She rolled her eyes at me. "No, cara mia. The telephone. Your husband called the house looking for you because you did not answer your cell phone."

"Oh." Well, there went that theory out the window.

Grandma Rosa shot me a smug look. "Now it is your turn to be corrected, eh? The sandal is on the other foot."

I decided to let that one go. "My battery died on the way over here, and I forgot to bring my charger.
